For decades, the Net was below the radar of mainstream journalism - its practitioners didn't even know of its existence. When I used to tell newspaper colleagues that I'd been using e-mail from home since 1975, they would make placatory noises and check the route to the nearest exit. Some time around 1995, that began to change - the conventional media realised something was up.

In a provocative book, Darwin among the Machines, George Dyson argues for example that the networked computers which now surround us by the million 11 12 13 14 38 Wonderment constitute, collectively, a form of intelligent life - one that's evolving in ways we may never understand. Dyson portrays the Net as a globally networked, electronic, sentient being. His analysis leans heavily on biological metaphors and the theory of symbiogenesis proposed in the early years of this century by a Russian botanist named Konstantin Merezhkovsky.
