20 In general, this broader approach to class analysis promises to shed more light on the rise of mass politics, since one of the striking features of mass politics was the diversity of groups that mobilized sometimes groups defined by occupation, such as farmers and workers, and sometimes groups defined ideologically or politically, such as nationalists and Catholics. Most often, however, this political or cultural Marxist approach to class analysis has focused on race and gender divisions in the contemporary period.

Most of the research on labor movements before 1914 asks how workers organized themselves as a class, which usually meant a group of wage earners. But workers organized around other interests besides wages and working conditions interests such as religion, ethnicity, gender, and political ideology. For labor historians, the crucial issues have traditionally been workers' social and economic situation and their level of militancy, as seen in strikes or union organizing, for example. From the point of view of interest group politics, the questions can be quite different.
