Coney Island became an ideal setting for portraying the estrangement of modernity, for giving voice to its anguished sense of homelessness, for celebrating fleeting glimpses of its joys. Ferlinghetti wrote of the new hordes of visitors to the park: “They are the same people only further from home/ on freeways fifty lanes wide/ on a concrete continent/ spaced with bland billboards/ illustrating imbecile illusions of happiness” (9). It is true that in Martí’s view of Coney Island there is a strong moral tone and a sense of distance, but his stance is not all of a piece.

’ (9:249) Although Martí qualifies his own position and seems to soothe the ego of his male readers by sharing the stereotype of woman as virgin and mother, he quotes from the woman’s speech with evident admiration and without judgment.

In a chronicle about life in New York, published two years after his arrival in the city, Martí discusses the women’s movement and praises the powerful oratory of one of the women at the closing of a meeting in support of female suffrage. Martí’s comments on the women’s movement are included in one of the many articles on New York City that he sent to La Opinión Nacional in Caracas, Venezuela. ” However, despite the variety of topics covered in some of these articles, the rather abrupt transitions from one topic to the next harmonize in the end in a series of suggestive juxtapositions.
