In book 3 the possibility for dialogue is closed both for wives and junior male friends. In books 1 and 2 we see William courteously modifying Anniball’s argument. The usefulness of this method is noted at the opening of book 3: ‘If it be so that your vertue receive increase by my discourses’, observes Anniball, ‘it is also that my discourses are much bettered by your witty demaundes’ (3. 2). In book 3, however, no such negotiation is possible. Anniball’s advice is explicit and unambiguous: one must be a loving rather than a punitive husband; one must select one’s wife from a ‘good’ family, and so on.

What is important about the self-deprecating gesture of pretending ignorance in the courtesy books is that it is often employed ‘ideally’ by a senior interlocutor who understands the limits of his social authority and who wants to bring out the potential of a junior companion.
